Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe joined partners at Welcome Break Warwick Services today (3 September) to support a driver wellbeing event aimed at promoting safer roads and healthier working lives for commercial drivers.

The event, organised through Project EDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death), offered free health and wellbeing checks, advice and signposting on issues including fatigue, sleep, mental health, nutrition and occupational health. Drivers were also invited to complete a short anonymous questionnaire exploring the challenges they face on the road.

The initiative forms part of the first Driver Health Week, a national campaign focused on improving the health and wellbeing of the UK’s professional driver workforce. Insights gathered at Warwick will contribute to discussions at Driver Health Day, taking place at Loughborough University on Friday 4 September, where representatives from government, industry and academia will consider practical ways to support drivers and improve road safety.

Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe, who is also the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners’ Joint National Lead for Roads Policing and Transport, said:

“Professional drivers play a vital role in keeping people, goods and services moving across the country. Looking after their health and wellbeing is not just important for them personally, it is also an important part of keeping our roads safe.

“It was encouraging to see drivers taking the opportunity to access support and share their experiences. By listening to those who spend their working lives on the road, we can better understand the pressures they face and help shape future approaches to road safety.”

The Warwick event was delivered in partnership with Project EDWARD, D4 Drivers, Warwickshire Police and Welcome Break. Initial findings from the anonymous survey will be shared at Driver Health Day at Loughborough University on 4 September.
