The Law

The law states children must use a car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first. You can choose a child car seat based on your child’s height or weight.

Children over 12 or more than 135cm in height must wear a seat belt.

Car Seat Check Events

Partners organise free child car seat safety checks at accessible venues across the county. Road Safety experts check that car seats are suitable for the vehicle, fitted correctly, and appropriate for the child’s age and weight. Keep an eye on social media or visit our dedicated events page.

Car Seat Smarter

Car Seat Smart is an online resource comprising six short films that focus on car seat safety and cover caring for your seat, fitting tips, vehicle issues, shopping for a seat, and legal exemptions.
