Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership is saying a huge thank you to Warwickshire’s Community Speed Watch (CSW) volunteers this week as part of the National Volunteer Week’s 40th anniversary celebrations from 3-9 June.  

So far in 2024, Warwickshire’s Community Speed Watch volunteers have collectively volunteered over 167 hours to the Community Speed Watch programme. This incredible contribution to improving road safety for everyone in Warwickshire has already resulted in over 46,000 vehicle checks, with more than 1,200 drivers receiving valuable education about their speed this year. These numbers are a testament to the dedication and the tangible difference that Warwickshire’s Community Speed Watch volunteers are making in our community. 

In a personal letter sent to each CSW volunteer, Philip Seccombe, Police and Crime Commissioner for Warwickshire and Chair of Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership said: 

“As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, I wanted to take a moment to extend the gratitude of Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership for your unwavering support and dedication to the Community Speed Watch programme.  

“The success of the Community Speed Watch initiative is built on the foundation of committed individuals like yourself, who generously volunteer time and energy. By working collaboratively with partners and local communities, you play a crucial role in making our roads safer for everyone.  

“Your efforts in monitoring and reducing speeding are vital to our shared goal of enhancing road safety across the county. Your contribution is not just a matter of hours and statistics; it is about the lives you help protect and the positive impact you have on your community. Every hour you spend on the roadside, every vehicle you check, and every driver you educate contributes significantly to the Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership’s ambitious target of reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roads by 50% by 2030.  

“Thanks to your hard work, our neighbourhoods are becoming safer places to live, work, and travel “ 

Community Speed Watch is a national initiative where active members of local communities join together to monitor speeds of vehicles in their local area with support from the police. The role of CSW is to use their visible presence to deter speeding in local communities to improve the quality of life of residents who want to feel safe when using their local roads recreationally or to travel.  

The partnership between CSW volunteers and the police improves both the engagement with and education of motorists to improve driver behaviour complementing police SNT, patrol, speed camera and mobile speed enforcement activities.
