Drivers asked to stay alert for pedestrians
If you’re a driver, did you know that you have more responsibility to help keep pedestrians safe on our roads? It’s called the ‘hierarchy of road users’ in the highway code.
During dark evenings, there are still lots of pedestrians about, including children going trick or treating this evening, or people walking on rural roads.
Do you know how to keep pedestrians safe?
- Slow down and be extra vigilant for pedestrians especially near schools and crossings and pubs
- Stay alert and don’t be distracted by your phone or anything else
- Look out for children coming home at dusk
- Stay alert for pedestrians on unlit rural roads
- Take extra care when reversing
Walking in the dusk or dark? Here are some tips to help enhance your visibility:-
- Wear bright reflective clothing
- Use flashing lights like an armband or torch
- Don’t be distracted by your friends, phone or anything else
- Hold children’s hands and keep them on the inside away from traffic
- In unlit areas where there is no pavement, walk facing traffic.
- Put your safety first. Where there is no pavement, if you are not sure a driver has seen you, don’t take any chances. Use the verge and stand well back from the road.
