One extra look costs nothing...
Motorcyclists are massively over-represented in crash statistics. In 2023, 315 motorcyclists died, and 5481 riders were seriously injured on British roads. Rider fatalities accounted for 19.4% of all on-road fatalities in 2023, yet data from the National Travel Survey suggest they travelled less than 1% of the total miles for all vehicles in the same period.
The most common contributory factor in Warwickshire was ‘Driver or rider failed to look properly’, followed by ‘Driver or rider failed to judge other person’s path or speed’ and ‘poor turn or manoeuvre’. In previous reviews of British collisions between motorcycles and cars, the car drivers have been found to be mostly at fault.
We are calling for motorists to look at least twice for motorcyclists, especially at junctions where most collisions occur. Please increase your awareness of motorcycles and help us reduce collisions caused by failure to spot them in time.
Together, we can ensure that all road users take extra care when approaching junctions and potentially save lives.
We are also sharing the Motorcycle Law Scotland #TakeAnotherLook campaign video below as to remind motorists of their role and responsibility towards vulnerable road users.
